Many of you are aware of M CCIE Agent Girl Friday, my very capable personal assistant. M is short for Emily and she manages my time as I try and navigate through my commitments and challenges. There are some similarities to the M of 007 fame, so here is a history of M from http://jmsbond.tripod.com.
The head of MI6 was M. M was the only person James Bond answers too. Commonly seen smoking a pipe, M would give 007 his missions. There have been three characters to Play M. The first was Bernard Lee who played M until he died in 1981. He was M from Dr. No - Moonraker. He was replaced by Robert Brown in Octopussy. For Your Eyes Only didn't feature M. The producers decided to respect Lee by not replacing him right away.
In Octopussy a new M took over. Robert Brown was the second M and a good one at that. Originally Robert Brown appeared in The Spy Who Loved Me, but not as M. The relationship between Bond and M had both its ups and downs. However things turned really bad when 007 pushed M to far in License To Kill. Robert Brown retired in 1995. Judi Dench replace Robert Brown.
Judi Dench took over MI6 in 1995. This new M does not care for Bond's attitude toward his mission. She doesn't take any crap from Bond or MI6 employees. Even though some people think that "she doesn't have the balls for the job". She does however think very highly of Bond.
Like James Bond I prefer to make my own reckless agenda with no regard to form and process, but because M is like Judi Dench and less like me she keeps me in line. Even if I have saved stuff like squirrels and the world once, I am still inclined to stray from my agenda. Because saving stuff does not qualify me as an organized sort. When I saved the world I did it regardless of my agenda and it took a while to get caught up, so next time M will schedule it. But I stray from my point, M is a great resource and she has managed in the past three months to organize my professional affairs from Zurich to London to Canada to Texas (where I barely escaped with my life) to Delaware (where I can barely stay awake). So I wanted to take the time to thank M for her boundless energy, her resourcefulness and her friendly demeanor even under pressure. (M can I have a day off now?)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you M!
