Longevity. In information technology, not much seems to have staying power these days. Smaller companies are assimilated by mightier ones, sometimes for the better, but as often for the worse. Engineers move from company to company, their loyalties shifting with stability, work opportunities, and compensation plans. Corporate leadership is replaced due to failure or scandal. Reference designs come under scrutiny and are discarded as changing needs antiquate the tried-and-true.

Not so the CCIE Flyer. CCIE Flyer is a community publication, written by and for network engineers willing to share their insights and technical wisdom with the readership. August 2010 proudly marks the third anniversary of this online magazine, with no end in sight. So pull up a keyboard, and take a few minutes to peruse what's been put together for you. What you find should help you stay in touch with emerging trends, poke you to replace that 10 year old switch you can't put on maintenance anymore, bring the odd smile to your face, and maybe even teach you something you didn't know before.

FORCE3

Since 1991, Force 3 has built a strong reputation for providing innovative, cost-effective information technology solutions and support services that meet our clients’ objectives and add value to their organizations. We are a true IT solutions provider—from assessment and design to implementation, management and support, we live and breathe our clients' networks.

Force 3 is dedicated to offering innovative technology solutions that improve productivity, reduce costs and enhance the way our clients conduct business in the commercial, government and health care sectors. We employ only the top engineers and support staff, ensuring a dynamic and effective solution to your needs, including system design, deployment and management, hardware procurement, professional services and project management. And judging by our consistently high customer satisfaction ratings, our clients love us!

Force 3 is located in Crofton, Maryland, just minutes from historic Annapolis and close to Washington, Baltimore and Maryland's beautiful Eastern Shore. In addition to our Crofton location, we operate offices in San Antonio, TX, and Herndon, VA, to work with the locally-based federal government.

Networks Are People.

At Force 3, we never forget that our ultimate customer is an actual person, someone sitting in front of the computer screen or standing in the data center, with a job to do. We understand the importance and the difficulty of that job, of what our customers are striving to achieve as people, not just users of technology. So, we prefer English to geek speak. We answer your questions a little faster, spend a little longer with you on the phone or at your site, work a little harder at building the kind of relationships that will help us design better network solutions.

Force3 is a great cpmpany to work for and their specialty of working in the Government sector has been a motivating factor for me to locate CLEARABLE CCIEs (and future CCIE) in UC, IPT, Voice, Security and Data Center. Pre-Sales and Post Sales roles are here for the asking. Don’t get lost in the mix send me an email with your resume attached eman@ccieflyer.com and I will make sure you get someone to read it and speak with you!

Three Years Old!

The CCIE Flyer celebrated our third year in August by taking a break. Dan was out riding his Harley Davidson over 3,600 miles throughout the Bad Lands, Sturgis, and the Great Divide. I was in Texas visiting the rest of the Condes there. We had a great summer and readership is at an all time high. We seemed to find ourselves out of pocket when we should have released the August issue so we held back to get back in sync with the calendar. So here we are with the September issue of the CCIE Flyer at the beginning of September. We really appreciate the emails and feedback we get every day for what Dan and I do here on the pages of the CCIE Flyer.
Happy Birthday CCIE Flyer!

The Contract That Bites

We explored the ridiculous nature of a paranoid clause in a real contract I was sent dealing with talking bad about the employer after leaving their employ. What is further distressing about this employer is the use of a more common section called NON-COMPETITION – DISCLOSURE. While “non-competes” are a normal part of many contracts the question is, are they enforceable? To read more...

AWKWARD SILENCE

Oh shut up! Let me get to the point here before you get all weird on me. The pregnant Pause, awkward silence, crickets, dead air or whatever you like to call it can kill! To read more...

Ask Uncle Eman

I often get emails and calls from aspiring or current CCIEs. The questions are often reflections of the industry confusion or professional aspirations of many. Here’s one email from this past week I wanted to respond to publicly. Ask Uncle Eman...

CCIE Hostage Standoff

CCIEs need to learn from my recent experience in the Middle East. I was asked, as often happens, by a CCIE to help him find a job. I spoke with him about his career goals and then found a role for him. The trouble was even though he was unemployed in the UK his previous employer in the UAE would not release his number. CCIE Flyer 3-Year Anniversary

August marks two anniversaries: three-years of the CCIE Flyer and seventeen years since I passed the CCIE exam. In the past three years, the CCIE Flyer has undergone significant growth and changes. The contributors are well-known people throughout the ranks of the CCIE community. Eman has been able to get people to write about a wide variety of topics, in addition to his topics on recruiting and finding jobs for CCIEs. Eman even went to bat for a few CCIEs who were getting hired, then had their jobs suspended by resellers who just wanted the CCIE numbers for their partner status, but didn't want to pay the people that they had just hired. It's good to see those changes. To read more...

Cisco Brand Protection Update with Karim Kattouf

We last talked with Cisco Brand Protection Program Manager Karim Kattouf in October to get an overview of what this team does and how they protect both Cisco end-customers as well as Cisco partners. In that interview, Karim talked about how the team was established, their charter and external partnerships with law enforcement, customs and others. To read more...

Well, I wanted to share a few thoughts. It is not just the CCIE title that gets you work, it is the "you" that seals the deal.

As I approach the 7th anniversary of passing the R&S lab, I have been thinking about my experiences since then. After passing the lab, my attitude was that a CCIE can always get a good job. For the first 5 years after passing the lab I was right. To read more...

Ticket #15

R1 is using v2 RIP broadcast. The network was configured with multicast-helper to transport the RIP broadcast over the multicast network to R6. However, R6 do not see R1's Lo route in its routing table. Find and fix the problem.

Cisco Live 2010 – Collaboration Track

Well, here I am writing my first article for the CCIE Flyer and it’s on Cisco Live. The last time I attended Cisco Live, it was still called Networkers. That was long enough ago that I am not even quite certain which city it was in, but I think Chicago. So it is an honor to write about my return to Cisco Live / Networkers for the 3rd anniversary of the CCIE Flyer!! Great job to Eman and all of the writers for getting to this point! To read more...

Your Feedback Wanted: When Is It Time To Go Independent?

For years, my services have belonged to one employer at a time. They advertise for a position. I interview. We chat, perhaps multiple times. If we like each other, there's a negotiated offer, and I come on board. We hug, shed a joyful tear or two, and I settle in behind the keyboard with fellow cubicle jocks riding herd on a network. 5 Resume Mistakes That Will Destroy Your Chances of Getting a Job

Anyone who has been in the I.T. field for a significant amount of time realizes that the first person to read your resume is probably not a person at all, but a computer. Before your resume even touches the inbox of a recruiter or an HR department it first gets scanned by a resume filtering program. To read more...

I am writing this month to share with you all my recent experiences as a CCIE formally in the training space, and as a CCIE suddenly thrown back into “normal” life as well as the transitions I went through to get through it. I would like to share with the community some of my story, and the steps I went through to recover from a drastic change in my professional and personal life. Hopefully this article will be of some help and encouragement to others out there that are searching for a job, or have been let go from a job and are transitioning into a new phase in their life.
