I was looking at the stats recently for articles and interviews that have drawn the most traffic. I was pleased to discover that Monica’s interview is the most read interview of all to-date. I was pleased to learn this and wanted to let everyone know in the Valentine’s Day issue of the CCIE Flyer this influential lady has a special place in the Flyer as well as in the hearts of CCIEs she has helped. Monica leads Cisco’s Worldwide Certification Program, so her vantage point to Channel Partner and CCIE certifications is quite unique. The Ladies of Padua
The Network Academy was launched at an all girls’ high school near me this past year. Present at the unveiling of the donated equipment from Cisco were a number of great people interested in diversity in the IT work force. From Delaware State University Robert Morand first contacted me to discuss the effort at Padua back in January of 2009. This was followed by calls with Marie Zwickert BDM of Corp Affairs and the Network Academy rep for the area. Things began to move ahead swiftly and soon Steve Bradley, Russell Merrill, Anil Datta, Nancy Bischoff, Jeffrey Harrington, Diane Fasnacht, Eve Tahmincioglu, and Jacqueline Wilson were all swept up in the effort. Gorgon Stare
I am always getting excited these days for some reason or another. Maybe I am easily amused? Maybe it’s because as a career agent I like having great work to share with my network of professionals. Just recruiting everyday day after day a guy could get bored, but not me at least not with work like this to amuse me. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I was writing about CCIEs making History, (no not the Cave Geek thing) but really helping the war effort with the Einstein3 Project. Well Gorgon Stare is a real weapon used to track and kill targets in warzones as an integral part of technology defense systems in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. What happens behind the scenes when some pilot sits at the controls of what appears to be a computer game? Data and video are created and who is responsible for the information? Networking is considered a typical male area, but as a woman, you can be as successful as any man you could know, and because of that you’ll be seen as a wonder woman  and will amuse them. You’ll be like another guy for your colleagues, it won’t matter if you’re prettier than them, they will treat you as an equal and will respect your opinion and decisions. This journey has changed my way of thinking and dealing with stuff in my personal life as well (like quickly trying to find the root of the problems, finding workarounds where a proper solution cannot be reached, and implement an alternative routing protocol for all your choices). But the most important things I always keep in mind are the following: be open minded and prepared, as much as you can, for the unexpected (you never know when a simple shiver will cause the router to reload) and always, always be modest, polite and respect both your colleagues and customers.
