Welcome to the March issue of the CCIE Flyer
The March issue of the CCIE Flyer has been fun for Dan and me. We have enjoyed our February as usual by adding another year to our history; yup we were both born in the same month 2 years apart. The success of the toy we enjoy playing with each month, the CCIE Flyer is also a real treat for us. We have had over 40,000 unique sessions in February and this is a real humbling experience for me. Eman and Narbik Join Forces
Eman and Narbik join forces Eman and Narbik are joining forces in yet another original industry initiative; as a team they will be providing career advice and planning to go along with the CCIE training. This soup-to-nuts solution will propel a new CCIE’s career to a new plateau. In this edition of the CCIE Flyer is a form for enrolling in Narbik’s CCIE boot camps offered all around the world. In addition, Eman can now negotiate group rates for Channel Partners and groups of individuals who want to attend the CCIE boot camps together. With the combined industry knowledge these two possess, Narbik's students will be poised to capitalize on their CCIE investment. Take me to this article....

Voice Bootcamp
I was in Toronto again and on this trip I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with the folks at Voice Bootcamp. I can identify with specializing since I am the CCIE Agent and dedicated to the careers of future CCIEs and current CCIEs. Faisal Khan has a passion for training voice and Unified Communications professionals. He lives and breathes Cisco voice and even further believes in how this knowledge can change a person’s life. SHOW ME THE MONEY JOBS!
CCIE Numbers 235XX and climbing. I am happily one of the folks many CCIEs call when they pass the lab. I have had several great calls and hear a lot about expectations the new CCIEs have as they are exiting the testing centers. It is not unusual to hear the new CCIE ask about money!!

So I went to Dubai
My trip was in support of the Cisco HR Partner Talent Forum and Job Fair held this past February 1st and 2nd. I was delighted to be included and to have members of my network attend. I let the CCIEs in my network know I was going to be in town and hosted a few for lunch. Take me to this article....

Monica is my new best friend!
This past week I found myself in need of help from Cisco when I discovered that two CCIEs were being held hostage by their CCIE numbers. Yup, the CCIEs had their CCIE numbers associated with a company that would not release them even after letting the two CCIEs go. Basically the company had used them to pass an audit and then put the CCIEs on unpaid leave. Help came from Cisco by way of Monica. Monica is my new best friend! Take me to this article....

Shame on You Attitude Systems!
I have learned that different cultures and countries have various laws protecting their labor force, companies doing business in their territories, or both. In some regions the labor force is so well protected that offer letters are devoid of details considered standard in the United States and other countries. It has been a real education for me. So when dealing with a global resource, like CCIEs, I want to be able to advise on what I have learned. But no matter what culture or country you come from there are some things that are simply black or white, right or wrong or acceptable or unacceptable. Take me to this article....

Interview with CCIE #2355 Diane Fasnacht
Diane I have enjoyed being your friend for several years now. Gosh all the way back in the late 90s seems like a long time ago. In Cisco years that would be 20 plus years now but in human time it has been a brief 10 years. I remember trying to find out if you were the first woman to earn the CCIE and bugging Cisco and others for the information. We were only able to find two before you who earned theirs. But hey, you are the 1329th CCIE but only the third woman and that’s not bad really. Take me to this article....

Interview with CCIE #2349 Barham Zuhdi
Barham, thank you for allowing me to carry your story in the pages of the CCIE Flyer, I was very pleased to have recently adding you to my network. There have been so many changes in the IT World over the past 10 years and I think you have seen many as I have myself. The fact that you are a woman as well as a CCIE makes you a rarity in the IT world. Take me to this article....

Terry Slattery:
The History of Ping
Everyone doing networking these days knows about the ping program. What is often not known is how it originated. I happened to be a by-stander and was able to see it being created. The real story about ping is found on a web page written by Mike Muuss, the author of the original version of ping: Take me to this article....

Can Internet Video Help Land You A Job?
In tough economic times the competition for good IT positions gets fiercer and even a CCIE needs to have an "ace in the hole" to land a covetted position.Take me to this article....

SIP- all that it’s cracked up to be?
If you have any involvement with IP Telephony in the past few years you will have most probably jumped onto the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) bandwagon at some stage. Take me to this article....

Bandwidth, Delay, Throughput and Some Math
Often the work in the field of network engineering and internetworking is not associated with exact science or precise computations (as for example in the field of mechanical engineering). The greatest evidence to that is the most popular answer a “seasoned” network engineer is likely to respond with when asked a technical question: “It depends…” Yes, the answer may depend on a number of variables and specific conditions that are hard to impossible to address with precise computations and simulated models. That is why, in my opinion, our profession depends heavily on the proof of concept testing, and that is why it is often considered as “more of an art” than “an exact science”. Wael Osama:
IS-IS and Fast Convergence
IS-IS is the most selected IGP by service providers and large carriers all over the world. This makes the deep understanding of this protocol an important skill. In this article I am just going to give you an overview about the timers available in IS-IS that can be tuned for fast convergence. Take me to this article....

My trip to Amazonia
Couple months ago I was involved in an interesting project, installation of a couple “core” switches (6500), 20 (maybe 30, really don´t remember the exact number right now) “access” switches (2950) and two routers 3845!
So far so good… the only “catch” I was told couple days after was… The installation would be in the middle of Amazonian forest (in a city called Urucu)! Take me to this article....

Nivon de Carvalho e Silva Junior:
Security Event Correlation and Analysis
Network security is constantly evolving. We have so many players developing so many security systems to make companies secure. We have technologies to inspect millions of packets as trey pass through the huge network, inspecting things such as Layer 7 information, aware of application standards and how they should be formatted even before those packets reach their destination. Chris Ellington:
My journey had finally come to an end, or perhaps it was just beginning?:
My journey had finally come to an end, or perhaps it was just beginning? I had passed the difficult lab exam known to many as the CCIE. I had my number, 6814, and it took all I had not to stand on the desk and cheer that I finally had passed. It was the end of the road. I knew that once I had my number, I would be set for good. The only thing I had to do now was pass the written exam every two years and I would maintain my CCIE and always be employed, or so I thought.Take me to this article....

Larry Hadrava:
Why Networking?
This is a question that I get asked quite a bit by people just entering the IT field. They are looking for something that will get them a big paycheck and easy work. They think that the “N.E.R.D.” ( Network Emergency Repair Dude ) has all of the above.Take me to this article....

Obituary
David John Gahm
I meet a lot of CCIEs and sometimes I hear about them doing great things or bad things and often celebrate with them when they get a new certification. But in August 2008, I met Dave Gahm at Networkers and just learned from some of his friends that he had passed. I was told by one that he was instrumental as a mentor and friend while he prepared for the lab and became a CCIE himself. He died doing something he loved and I am saddened by the news of his passing. Take me to this article....
